Structural equation modeling SEM includes a diverse set of mathematical models, computer algorithms, and statistical methods that fit networks of constructs to data. Structural equation models are often used to assess unobservable 'latent' constructs. They often invoke a measurement model that defines latent variables using one or more observed variables , and a structural model that imputes relationships between latent variables. Use of SEM is commonly justified in the social sciences because of its ability to impute relationships between unobserved constructs latent variables and observable variables. Instead, psychologists develop a hypothesis of intelligence and write measurement instruments with items questions designed to measure intelligence according to their hypothesis. With SEM, "intelligence" would be the latent variable and the test items would be the observed variables. A simplistic model suggesting that intelligence as measured by four questions can predict academic performance as measured by SAT, ACT, and high school GPA is shown above top right.

Various low-resolution experimental techniques have gained more and more popularity in obtaining structural information of large biomolecules. In order to interpret the low-resolution structural data properly, one may need to construct an atomic model of the biomolecule by fitting the data using computer simulations.

The experiment also examines the extent to which models can answer questions of biological interest, and how different types of sparse or low resolution experimental data can improve model accuracy. CASP13 will begin in April and will address the following questions:. Please check, though, that your basic registration information is current.

Dynamic Substructuring is a method that combines models for the various parts of a structure to estimate the dynamic response or other properties of the assembled structure. The substructure models may be analytical models such as finite element models, or they may be derived from measurements. This book reviews the most common state-of-the art methods for substructuring and model reduction and presents a framework that encompasses most method, highlighting their similarities and differences. The overarching mathematical concepts are reviewed, as well as practical details needed to implement the methods. Various examples are presented to elucidate the methods, ranging from academic examples such as spring-mass systems, which serve to clarify the concepts, to real industrial case studies involving automotive and aerospace structures.

Protocol DOI: Genome sequencing projects have resulted in a rapid increase in the number of known protein sequences. In contrast, only about one-hundredth of these sequences have been characterized at atomic resolution using experimental structure determination. In contrast, only about one-hundredth of these sequences have been characterized at atomic resolution using experimental structure determination methods. Computational protein structure modeling techniques have the potential to bridge this sequence-structure gap. In the following chapter, we present an example that illustrates the use of MODELLER to construct a comparative model for a protein with unknown structure. Automation of a similar protocol has resulted in models of useful accuracy for domains in more than half of all known protein sequences.
