What most impressed the first readers of this memoir, however, was the candor with which he describes his life in gay Berlin of the s and his struggles to save his companion, a German man named Heinz, from the Nazis. Christopher and His Kind

In the text, Isherwood candidly expounds upon events in his life from to , including his sojourn in Berlin which was the inspiration for his popular novel Goodbye to Berlin. Isherwood decided late in his life that he had a moral obligation to renounce the self-censorship that marked his early novels, specifically the excision of any hint of his homosexuality. Accordingly, in Christopher and His Kind , he recounts his experiences as a young gay expatriate enticed by the liberated atmosphere of Weimar Berlin into a quest for sexual and intellectual emancipation. Isherwood posits that his homosexuality , far from a marginal private shame to be suppressed, was a central element in his human and creative development, an identity he cherished and shared with many others "my tribe", "my kind" with whom he felt a special kinship. Many other writers of the 30s had chosen Berlin as elective site for expatriation, because it was seen as a locus of history in the making, a city of history. In it, the shared textuality of the urban and the literary is developed along thematic lines that stem from a basic autobiographical matrix: the city as the elected location for the construction of a personal, sexual and ideological identity; the structural identification between the narrating self also an authorial projection and the city as body; and, finally, the city as illusion, artifice and cluster of isolated realities, in its turn related to a problematic caesura between individual and community. Whether they run hot or cold, his critics are uniform in regarding the film as an exercise in cinematic mannerism or mood. To put it succinctly, mood has gone to market. The term mood piece currently designates any sonically wrapped montage of images designed to convey the emotionalism of a brand, product, or service provider.
