It also impacts on their level of learning disability and functional interaction with others. Read more. Poorly controlled epilepsy can also present as a huge burden of care and anxiety to family members and carers. Seizures are often distressing to witness, can require urgent intervention and can lead to injury or sudden and premature death. We know that good seizure control for individuals with the most complex seizures often requires complex assessments and investigations e.

It may require trials of treatments that can come with side effects and interactions with other drugs. This has often depended on the history of service configuration and suitable clinical skill availability in localities. Specific interests and expertise of clinicians and what the local commissioning priorities have been have been instrumental in shaping local area services. This should enable both commissioners of care and providers of care to recognise what is currently available to people and what could or should be available if their needs are going to be fully and satisfactorily met.

It should be used by clinicians in both primary and secondary care to recognise service gaps and build more collaborative models of working. Families and carers should also look at the services they receive and see if they measure up to what they need using some of the ideas provided here. Whilst this guidance is specifically focussed on the needs of people with learning disability who have epilepsy there are many people with autism without a learning disability who also have epilepsy and the principles in this guidance should be equally applied to commissioning services for this group of individuals too.

Perhaps for me, the most important thing is the need to end any sense of futility or nihilism. For far too long there has been an attitude amongst some professionals that more complex epilepsies are intractable and fully resistant to treatment. This may lead them to think it is futile to keep trying to improve the situation or that it is not a commissioning priority. View full metadata. Item views 0. Full item downloads 0. One quarter of people with epilepsy have an intellectual disability ID and one fifth of people with an ID have epilepsy. Both conditions are associated with higher levels of morbidity, stigma and premature mortality. There have been calls for action to promote more research in this group. We examined if this group are represented adequately in current research. T he proportion of research output in epilepsy conferences and publications relevant to ID and the proportion in ID conferences and publications on epilepsy for — were identified. Data was analysed to determine the proportion of presented research specifically identifying people with epilepsy and ID. Similarly only 1.

Most people with epilepsy do not have intellectual disabilities, but a substantial minority of people with intellectual disabilities have epilepsy. Epilepsy is known to be a potentially disabling, chronic and socially isolating condition. A diagnosis of Epilepsy even now still carries a stigma. The individual and their family can be affected physically, psychologically and socioeconomically. Similarly individuals with Intellectual disability, in broad terms a condition which occurs during the developmental period and leads to deficits in intelligence, overall development and adaptive functioning skills or abilities, and their families and carers, experience a range of physical, social and psychological challenges.

Generally, having a learning disability does not cause epilepsy, and having epilepsy does not cause a learning disability. Some people may have epilepsy and learning disabilities, and both may be caused by the same underlying problem in the way their brain works. The level and effect of a learning disability will vary from one person to another. Some people may need support, while others are able to live more independent lives. The causes of learning disabilities can vary but they generally happen before birth or in childhood before 18 years of age. Brain damage at birth or from infections in early childhood can also cause a learning disability. There are many types of epileptic seizure and for anybody with epilepsy, they can affect awareness, feelings, movement or behaviour.
