If you're interested in contemporary art or experimental music, this book is a necessity. It's only a collection of essays, I often just open it up and read a random piece of writing. I have yet to be let down. It is both intrigueing and eye-opening. Silence : Lectures and Writings.
Over the last decades, John Milton Cage has become one of the most interesting and influencing persons in music as well as in writing. His extraordinary compositions and unconventional approaches to art in general gave way to a new era of thought. With respect to his restless development of new ideas and innovative views unto art, people, and life, he may most of all be called a philosopher. This thesis does not only present John Cage as a writer, it does especially place emphasis on his ideas about art which are inseparably connected to his writings, as will be shown. Chapter three is concerned with the most important method Cage used while composing music as well as writing: the use of the so-called chance operations. This method is introduced with the help of a short experiment section 3. Subsection 3.
This collection of essays and presentations by noted composer and musical innovator John Cage attempts to capture on paper both the intellectual and stylistic creativity with which he approached his work. In both the themes of the collection and the internal arrangement of the individual pieces, the author explores the nature of music, music's relationship to sound, and the value of incorporating randomness into what had previously been an ordered, carefully considered art form. He then, in four essays, explores the ongoing development of the symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationship between modern music and modern dance, suggesting that the experience of each was expanded by the influence and incorporation of elements of the other. Two lengthy presentations in the middle of the collection expand upon the Buddhist theory at the heart of the author's theories and practical work. This theory, simply stated, suggests that while values are based on expectations and judgment, an experience's actual worth ought to be based on what it is, not on what an individual thinks it should be. Two further, and equally lengthy, lectures juxtapose experimental form with philosophical content.
