A biosensor is an analytical device, used for the detection of a chemical substance, that combines a biological component with a physicochemical detector. The biologically sensitive elements can also be created by biological engineering. The transducer or the detector element , which transforms one signal into another one, works in a physicochemical way: optical, piezoelectric , electrochemical, electrochemiluminescence etc. The biosensor reader device connects with the associated electronics or signal processors that are primarily responsible for the display of the results in a user-friendly way.

Melamine is an emerging contaminant in milk, infant formula and pet food. This review focuses on chemical sensors and biosensors for detecting melamine residue. We present the principles, the mechanisms and the performances of the sensors including optical sensors, electrochemical sensors, aptamer-based sensors and immunosensors. We also propose the future perspectives in developing sensors for the detection of melamine. The analysis of the activities in one year allows one to obtain a snapshot of the Italian scenario capturing the main directions of the research activities. Furthermore, the distance of more than one year makes meaningful the bibliometric analysis of the reviewed papers. The review shows a research community distributed among different scientific disciplines, from chemistry, physics, engineering, and material science, with a strong interest in collaborative works. The term analytical implies the concept of measurability.

Technological needs for chemical, ionic and biological species detection are giving rise to continuous research and development in physico-chemistry and biology. The constant progress being made in the theoretical and technological aspects concerning studies and developments of chemical sensors, biosensors and biochips is presented in this book by different scientists and professors from different universities and constitutes an updating of the state of the art for chemical sensors, biosensors and biochips. This book places a large emphasis on interaction between chemical and biological species, in a gaseous or liquid state, and details mineral and biological materials acting as sensitive elements. The role of electrical, electrochemical, piezoelectric and optical transducers in detection mechanisms are presented through their developments and from a performance point-of-view. Micro-reactors, nanotechnologies and flexible substrates, are considered in relation to their role in neural networks.
