Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research illustrates with numerous examples how quantitative methods can most fruitfully contribute to linguistic analysis and research. It does not intend to offer an exhaustive presentation of all statistical techniques available to linguistics, but to demonstrate the contribution that statistics can and should make to linguistic studies. This book shows how quantitative methods and statistical techniques can supplement qualitative analyses of language. It attempts to present some mathematical and statistical properties of natural languages, and introduces some of the quantitative methods which are of the most value in working empirically with texts and corpora, illustrating the various issues with numerous examples and moving from the most basic descriptive techniques to decision-taking techniques and to more sophisticated multivariate statistical language models. I enjoyed reading this book. As a reader I could both improve my knowledge of some of the statistical procedures and obtain a better understanding of some aspects of corpus linguistics. Applied linguistics postgraduate students and researchers will find this book helpful in understanding some of the complex statistical procedures like DFA.

It seems that you're in Germany. We have a dedicated site for Germany. Editors: Phakiti , A. This Handbook provides a comprehensive treatment of basic and more advanced research methodologies in applied linguistics and offers a state-of-the-art review of methods particular to various domains within the field. Arranged thematically in 4 parts, across 41 chapters, it covers a range of research approaches, presents current perspectives, and addresses key issues in different research methods, such as designing and implementing research instruments and techniques, and analysing different types of applied linguistics data. Innovations, challenges and trends in applied linguistics research are examined throughout the Handbook.

This direction is clearly a strength in its onset, as the book aims to add clarity and specificity to the Humanities and its empirical scope. Early references gries, may have been more interested in explaining the theory behind the data rather than developing different examples, whereas more recent references Bachman, may have missed an explicit and direct approach to the many-fold possible perspectives arising in language investigation. A second strong point in this publication is its affordance for non-experts as a descriptive resource with illustrations of statistics adapted to actual research concerns.

Quantitative Research in Linguistics

Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research

Do we need statistics when we have linguistics? Statistics is known to be a quantitative approach to research. However, most of the research done in the fields of language and linguistics is of a different kind, namely qualitative. Succinctly, qualitative analysis differs from quantitative analysis is that in the former no attempt is made to assign frequencies, percentages and the like, to the linguistic features found or identified in the data. In quantitative research, linguistic features are classified and counted, and even more complex statistical models are constructed in order to explain these observed facts.
