There were theological and spiritual giants in the earth in the days of the English Puritans, and Stephen Charnock was prominent among them. His Works present a feast of rich teaching and exposition, characterized throughout by sound theology, profound thought, and an imaginative style.

The five volumes now reprinted from the classic nineteenth-century Nichol edition contain a total of more than 2, pages and 64 distinct discourses or sermons. If he were not a fool he would not imagine a thing so contrary to…the rational dictates of his own soul, and contrary to the testimony of every creature and link in the chain of creation. In this Charnock sets forth the doctrine of providence with great clarity, and then applies it to instruct, comfort, and exhort the people of God.

Each discourse first expounds, then applies, the text of Scripture on which it is based. It is perhaps surprising that present-day Christians seem so often to be confused about what it means to be born again.

Whatever the reasons for this confusion, the fault cannot be laid at the door of previous generations of preachers and writers, particularly Puritans like Charnock, who took immense pains to search into and explain the doctrine from Scripture. The first six discourses — all on texts from the Gospel of John — focus on the knowledge of God in Christ as the only way to eternal life and happiness, showing that true and saving knowledge of God is only in and by Christ, that conviction of sin by the Spirit of God is the way to this knowledge, and that to remain in unbelief is to remain in misery under the wrath of God.

By way of contrast with the earlier volumes — most of which are based on texts from the New Testament — five of the discourses here draw on texts from the Old Testament Scriptures.

Submit your testimonial. Peter Davidson — December 13, Next to the Bible this book is the most significant read in Christianity. In 40 years of reading theology this is astonishing. James R. Murphy — March 3, It has had a very profound effect on my faith and life. Jim Bohn — November 10, To read Charnock is to stand at the gate of heaven. Every sentence is a sermon. Every paragraph especially in his work on Providence is inspiring and humbling. Your Testimonial.

Stephen Charnock – The Existence and Attributes of God

The Works of Stephen Charnock

Page 92 — Those that have neither God in their thoughts, nor in their tongues, nor in their works, cannot properly be said to acknowledge him. Where the honor of God is not practically owned in the lives of men, the being of God is not sensibly acknowledged in the hearts of men. The principle must be of the same kind with the actions; if the actions be atheistical, the principle of them can be no better. Page 93 — In sins of omission we own not God, in neglecting to perform what he enjoins; in sins of commission we set up some lust in the place of God, and pay to that the homage which is due to our Maker. In both we disown him; in the one by not doing what he commands, in the other by doing what he forbids. We deny his sovereignty when we violate his laws; we disgrace his holiness when we cast our filth before his face; we disparage his wisdom when we set up another rule as the guide of our actions than that law he hath fixed; we slight his sufficiency when we prefer a satisfaction in sin before a happiness in him alone; and his goodness, when we judge it not strong enough to attract us to him.

Unless we behold Him in and through Christ, the Mediator, the terrors of His Majesty would overwhelm us. We dare not approach the Father except in Christ because of our sins. We first fasten our eyes upon Christ, then upon the Father. If Christ does not bear our guilt and reconcile us unto God, we perish! The works of Stephen Charnock can be found here in old English:.
