Structure and Function in Wole Soyinka's Death and the King's Horseman.pdf

Death, the end of life on the existential plane or of material being, has transfixed humans with its unblinking gaze from the origins of time, so much so that death has even been posited as the aim of life itself.

Sigmund Freud, Moses and Monotheism , trans. Sigmund Freud, The Freud Reader , ed. Peter Gay New York: W. Norton, , It should be pointed out, however, that the contemporary definition of trauma as posttraumatic stress syndrome extends the definition beyond disordered mental responses to military combat, natural, or mechanical catastrophes to include rape, child abuse, and a number of other violent occurrences.

On this point, it is worth noting that birth, which instances the beginning of an autonomous living human being in the external world, has been described as a traumatic event. Knopf, See Soyinka, Myth, Literature , I should be quick to add, though, that Ketu H. Georg M. I have discussed this notion in greater detail with respect to the poet and playwright Derek Walcott—a writer to whom Soyinka is often compared—in Chapter 4.

Norton, , 3—41 at 26 and — at , respectively. Norton, , —89 at I am not suggesting that atrocities and depredations are peculiar to Africa and that the postcolonial writer or public intellectual automatically loses the moral high ground for that reason alone. As Walter Benjamin famously noted, every civilization is a document of barbarism, and the postcolonial intellectual can legitimately claim that the West has the far more voluminous document of barbarism in which he or she has been a victim too many times.

The point, however, is that the West already occupies the epistemological grounds and, through its domination of the means of propaganda, continues to set the terms and tone of the debate. For instance, although the Rwanda genocide took place at the same time as the bloodbath in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the dominant mode of presenting the former was as African barbarism or savagery merely reasserting itself, while the ethnic cleansing horror in Europe was always humanized through a historical context.

The history of unequal global power relations thus puts the burden of always being morally correct on the postcolonial subject.

Identity or Death!

Death and the King's Horseman is a play by Wole Soyinka based on a real incident that took place in Nigeria during the colonial era : the horseman of a Yoruba King was prevented from committing ritual suicide by the colonial authorities. Soyinka wrote the play in Cambridge , where he was a fellow at Churchill College during his political exile from Nigeria. In particular, he says that the play should not be considered as "clash of cultures. Death and the King's Horseman builds upon the true story on which Soyinka based the play, to focus on the character of Elesin, the King's Horseman of the title. According to Yoruba tradition, the death of the king must be followed by the ritual suicide of the king's horseman as well as the king's dog and horse, because the horseman's spirit is essential to helping the chief's spirit ascend to the afterlife. Otherwise, the king's spirit will wander the earth and bring harm to the Yoruba people.

On the way to his death, Elesin, who is escorted by a group of praise-singers and drummers, encounters a beautiful young woman in the marketplace. Although she is engaged to the son of the market-woman Iyaloja, Iyaloja gives her blessing to Elesin's marriage to her before he dies. Meanwhile, the British District Officer Pilkings and his wife throw a fancy-dress ball to welcome the arrival of the Prince of Wales, and unwittingly commit sacrilege by dressing in egungun masquerade costumes, to be worn only when invoking the spirits of the dead. The ball is attended by Olunde, Elesin's eldest son, whom the Pilkings took from his native home to send to medical school in England. Far from being grateful, Olunde now feels alienated from his own community but equally not accepted by the white Europeans. At the ball he argues with Jane Pilkings about the colonial attitudes of the British. However, the market-women, led by Iyaloja, hold back the soldiers long enough for Elesin and his bride to be wed.

Elesin Oba, the King's Horseman, has a single destiny. When the King dies, he must commit ritual suicide and lead his King's favourite horse and dog through the passage to the world of the ancestors. A British Colonial Officer, Pilkings, intervenes. You can unsubscribe from newsletters at any time by clicking the unsubscribe link in any newsletter.

Sacrifice is a central component of the ritual. Only through Elesin sacrificing himself can the ritual be completed. Of course, Elesin cannot complete this successfully, due to both external and internal circumstances. It is Olunde who makes the ultimate sacrifice by taking his own life so he can fulfill the Yoruba ritual.

Akinwande Oluwole Soyinka was born in western Nigeria on July 13 th , His parents were Christians, but were both from different Yoruba groups. In Nigeria Soyinka was exposed to both Western and Yoruba cultures. In Nigeria gained its independence and Soyinka returned to Nigeria, where he absorbed as much Yoruba culture as possible. In and Soyinka was arrested for criticizing the government over the radio and in print.
