Don't have an account? This chapter examines a different mode of representing Puritan and non-Puritan interactions through Malvolio from Twelfth Night and Angelo from Measure for Measure. Both plays have been called anti-Puritan satire, but this chapter shows how Shakespeare uses those characters to alert audiences to tensions surrounding Puritanism rather than to attack them outright. It explores the basis on which either character can be considered a Puritan. Twelfth Night and Measure for Measure show possible dark sides to Puritanism, but also suggest problems with anti-Puritan prejudice. The irresolution about the place of Puritans in society demonstrates how vexing to closure and how intractable the problem of sectarian coexistence could appear. Puritan Laws and Character By Henry William Elson 1904

In this passage, Elson discusses the Puritans: a group of English Reformed Protestants who notably founded Massachusetts Bay Colony and other New England settlements in the s and who were known for their religious and legal severity. As you read, take notes on how the Puritans influenced colonialist America. They were under separate governments; but their aims and hopes, their laws, for the most part, and their past history were the same. The people as a whole were liberty-loving in the extreme, but the individual was restrained at every step by laws that no free people of today would tolerate for an hour. Paternalism 1 in government was the rule in the other colonies and in Europe, but nowhere was it carried to such an extreme as in New England.

The Scarlet Letter

Puritans became noted in the 17th century for a spirit of moral and religious earnestness that informed their whole way of life, and they sought through church reform to make their lifestyle the pattern for the whole nation. Their efforts to transform the nation contributed both to civil war in England and to the founding of colonies in America as working models of the Puritan way of life. Puritanism may be defined primarily by the intensity of the religious experience that it fostered. Calvinist theology and polity proved to be major influences in the formation of Puritan teachings.

History of Puritanism
