Kolb's Learning Styles and Experiential Learning Cycle

By Saul McLeod , updated David Kolb published his learning styles model in from which he developed his learning style inventory. Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two levels: a four-stage cycle of learning and four separate learning styles. Kolb states that learning involves the acquisition of abstract concepts that can be applied flexibly in a range of situations. Kolb's experiential learning style theory is typically represented by a four-stage learning cycle in which the learner 'touches all the bases':. Concrete Experience - a new experience or situation is encountered, or a reinterpretation of existing experience.

Kolb's Theory of Learning Styles

Drawing on the foundational theories of John Dewey and Kurt Lewin, we examine recent developments in theory and research on experiential learning and explore how this work can enhance experiential learning in higher education. We introduce the concept of learning space as a framework for understanding the interface between student learning styles and the institutional learning environment. We illustrate the use of the learning space framework in three case studies of longitudinal institutional development. Finally, we present principles for the enhancement of experiential learning in higher education and suggest how experiential learning can be applied throughout the educational environment by institutional development programs, including longitudinal outcome assessment, curriculum development, student development, and faculty development. This study compared the grade point averages of first-year students in five institutions of higher education in a southern state with learning typologies set forth in the Learning Styles Inventory by Canfield. Results of the analysis of variance reflected an effect of learning style, sex, and race. Whites tended to have better grades than blacks had. Although there were no race differences in the proportions of students in the various learning styles, there were sex differences. Except for mathematics, the effect of major on the association of sex and learning style was moderate to none. Findings from the study suggest a need for administrative and instructional changes. Learning to research might become a challenge for undergraduate students since it needs navigating skills on how they look and relook the current trends in particular area globally. Although this study is not a new endeavor in ELT contexts, there remains lack of empirical evidence how it was experienced by undergraduate students in an Indonesian EFL context during a collaborative research project. Framed in exploratory case study the data is collected through a survey given to student teachers and in-depth semi structured interview to four student teachers in an English education department which were then thematically analyzed. Finding and implications of the study are provided further in this paper. Blumenfeld, P.

Kolb's learning styles are one of the best-known and widely used learning styles theories. Psychologist David Kolb first outlined his theory of learning styles in He believed that our individual learning styles emerge due to our genetics , life experiences , and the demands of our current environment. In addition to describing four different learning styles, Kolb also developed a theory of experiential learning and a learning style inventory. In his experiential theory, learning is viewed as a four-stage cycle. First, immediate and concrete experiences serve as a basis for observation.

This study provides an initial examination of a learning style topology through the comparison of information processing and instructional preference toponymies. It was hypothesized that learning style modes would be discernible within each of these toponymies and that the toponymies would demonstrate orthogonality. Data analyzed for university students supported these hypotheses. This is a preview of subscription content, access via your institution. Rent this article via DeepDyve.
